Reformer Pilates is becoming one of the most popular ways to build strength, improve posture and move better — but if you're new to it, you might be wondering what to wear. The reformer machine requires specific clothing considerations, and grip socks are essential equipment.

What to Wear

Fitted Leggings or Shorts

Reformer Pilates requires controlled movements on a moving platform. Loose clothing can get caught in springs, shift around, or make movements harder. Choose stretchy, close-fitting garments that stay in place.

Avoid ultra-loose joggers, slippery fabrics, and anything that needs frequent adjustment.

A Supportive Top

Your clothing should stay in place when lying down, avoid riding up, and allow your instructor to assess your posture. Tank tops, fitted tees, and light long-sleeves all work well.

Layer If You Want

Your body temperature rises during footwork and full-body flows, so bringing a removable layer is practical — but keep it light.

If I had to pick one thing you can't skip, it's grip socks. They change how safe and stable you feel on the reformer — it's the difference between thinking about your feet and trusting them.

A Note from Nadia

Why Grip Socks Are Essential

Safety

The reformer is a smooth surface, and many movements involve standing, kneeling or balancing on the carriage. Grip socks prevent slipping and provide better stability during these movements.

Performance

With stronger grip, you can push more confidently, hold planks more easily, and stabilise during single-leg work — improving your overall technique.

Hygiene and Comfort

Grip socks protect your feet, keep equipment cleaner, reduce sweat and slip risk, and keep your feet warm during winter.

Vitális grip socks are available at the studio — £10 (grey or white). See the FAQs for more on what to bring to your first class.

What Not to Wear

  • Baggy trousers — can catch in springs
  • Thick hoodies or jumpers — restrict movement
  • Clothing with zips or buttons — can damage upholstery
  • Slippery socks — unsafe on the reformer
  • Short shorts that ride up — constant adjustment needed

What to Bring to Your First Class

  • Water bottle
  • A light layer
  • Grip socks (or purchase at the studio)
  • Hair tie if needed

Everything else is provided by the studio.
